NBC Today Show Summer Concert Series

“NBC Today Show is the highest-rated breakfast television show in the US. For six seasons, I was the FOH mixer for their Summer Concert Series, which takes place every Friday in the street outside their studios in Rockefeller Plaza.

Load-in at 1AM, line-check at 5 AM, soundcheck at 5.30 AM. Live broadcast begins at 7AM and the bands play 3 songs to an audience of around 1500 - 2000 at 8.30 AM. Bands are not allowed to use their own engineers, so I really did get to mix all these artists”:

Paul McCartney 'Secret' Performances

In Oct. 2013, Paul McCartney performed 2 'secret' shows with his full band in New York City - the first at the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts in Queens, and the second on the back of a truck in Times Square.”

I worked with his Production Manager, Sound Engineer, the audio team from Clair Brothers and PRG Audio (who provided the equipment) to design and install a system capable of doing these two unusual shows. After the first show, we loaded the entire stage setup, PA and console onto the back of a flatbed truck and drove it into Times Square for a 4-song unannounced set.

Queen Fan Club Performance

“When Freddie Mercury became too ill to perform, the other 3 members of Queen decided to play a special show for their fan club, with Chris Thompson (of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band) on lead vocals. They performed for about 75 minutes in a small club in London and I was honored to be asked to mix it.

When I walked into the first rehearsal, there were a couple of guys at the mixing console, trying to get some levels on the vocal mics. I said ‘hi’, introduced myself and asked if I could help. They both said that would be great and the one guy stuck out his hand and said “Thanks, I’m Brian’ and the other guy said ‘Pleased to meet you. I’m Roger” ....”

Hall and Oates

“Daryl Hall & John Oates are the most successful and best selling pop duo of all time. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, Hall & Oates, specialize in a fusion of ‘rock & roll’ and ‘rhythm & blues’ styles, which they dubbed ‘rock and soul’.

They have sold over 60 million albums in the US alone, and have achieved a total of 8 number 1 hit singles, 34 singles in the Billboard Top 100, seven Platinum albums and six Gold albums.

Since 2003, with the release of a new 4-CD compilation box-set, and a number of very high profile appearances in film and TV shows (American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, The Daily Show, etc.) H & O have created a whole new buzz for their music and started to attract a newer, younger audience, culminating in a headlining appearance at Bonnaroo Festival with Montreal-based techno duo, Chromeo.

They tour regularly throughout the US, with full production, playing at festivals, arenas, theaters, and private events.”

Mott The Hoople '74

"Mott The Hoople is one of the most influential rock bands of all time – Queen, The Clash, Def Leppard all cite them as being essential to their formation. Formed in 1969 and fronted by lead singer/composer, Ian Hunter, the band struggled in their early years before David Bowie gave them the song ‘All The Young Dudes’ to cover, which became an immediate world-wide hit and launched their meteoric rise.

They broke up in 1974, and after a couple of one-off reunions in the UK, embarked on a full US tour in 2019, for which I was honored to be both Tour Manager and FOH Engineer."

The Chieftains

“2020 marked the 58th Anniversary of legendary Irish band, The Chieftains beginning.  Since 1962 they have been six-time Grammy Award winners and been highly recognized for reinventing traditional Irish music on a contemporary and International scale.

Billed as the 'Irish Goodbye Tour' they embarked on what is (maybe?) their final tour, playing prestigious theaters and concert halls around the US, and bringing their joyous blend of  instrumental & vocal music and dancing.

I am currently their Tour Manager and FOH Engineer, and having a ball, mixing this incredible group of outstanding musicians."

Yo Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble

“Founded by cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, The Silk Road Ensemble is a collective of internationally renowned performers and composers from more than 20 countries. Each Ensemble member's career illustrates a commitment to maintain the integrity of authentic traditions while nourishing global connections.

Ensemble artists, from countries as diverse as China, India, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Korea, Iran, the United States, etc., have collaborated on a diverse range of musical and multimedia projects, presenting innovative performances that spring from Eastern and Western traditions and contemporary musical crossroads.

Often built round a traditional string quintet, with the addition of instruments such as pipa, tabla, tar, shakuhachi, ney, oud and kamancheh - instruments from countries along the length of the Silk Road.

The Silk Road Ensemble has recorded five albums and performed to critical acclaim throughout Asia, Europe and North America.”

Boston Pops

“The Boston Pops is the world’s most famous Pops orchestra. I worked with them  for 10 years mixing their Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, which is a live broadcast on CBS from the Hatch Shell in Boston, with an audience of 12,000 in front of the shell and between 400,000 and 500,000 along the banks of the Charles River. Featuring host, Craig Ferguson and special guests performing with the orchestra. Over the years, these have included:

John Mellencamp

Neil Diamond,

Big & Rich

David Lee Roth (of Van Halen)

Rascal Flatts

Blue Man Group

Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Other projects included their annual ‘Evening at Pops’ TV series on PBS, filmed at Symphony Hall in Boston. With guests including Ricky Scaggs, Michael McDonald, Vanessa Williams, Josh Groban, Audra McDonald, Kristen Chernoweth, John Williams, Nancy Wilson, Martin Short, etc.

Plus their ‘Christmas at Pops’ TV shows, and summer & Christmas national tours.”

Fourth of July Celebration, Evening at Pops TV show, Christmas at Pops TV show, Summer Concert Tour, Christmas Concert Tour, New Year’s Eve show.

A touring show, playing large prestigious arenas and concert halls all over the world. Featuring a complete screening of all the movies in the  “Lord of the Rings” trilogy in HD on a giant overhead screen, with Howard Shore's entire score performed live and synchronized to the film.

“Technically it came off brilliantly, unlike the muddy presentation of the “The Wizard of Oz” two years ago, “Fellowship” was clear and detailed, with well-balanced sound and an orchestra that sounded extremely natural despite being amplified.”

Washington Post review of the show at Wolf Trap

A multimedia concert featuring selections from Danny Elfman's scores to fifteen of Tim Burton's films; including Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Big Fish. Clips from the films are shown overhead and include Tim Burton's original drawings for the characters and scenic design.

The concert concludes with a medley of songs from Nightmare Before Christmas, with Danny Elfman reprising his singing role as Jack Skellington.

The entire film, with all the music performed and sung live, featuring Danny Elfman reprising his role as the lead character, Jack Skellington, many of the original cast from the movie:  Catherine O'Hara, Paul Reubens, Ken Page, etc., and 5 actor/singers voicing all the other characters. Debuted with 4 sold-out performances in Tokyo, followed by eight sold-out performances at the Hollywood Bowl, and performances including Barclay Center in NYC and Wembley Arena in London.

There have been several Beatles orchestral projects over the years, but this is the first where the orchestrations are actually taken from the original recordings.  The project was given unique access to the original recordings and charts at Abbey Road. As a visual backdrop they were also given exclusive use of 600 never-before seen photos of the Fab Four.   Following the world premier with the Kalamazoo Symphony, I have been retained as the Sound Consultant and Mixer for all engagements.

A presentation of the entire movie, with the score performed live by a symphony orchestra and chorus and synchronized to the film.

A presentation of the entire movies, with the John Williams' score performed live by a symphony orchestra and chorus and synchronized to the film.

A presentation of James Cameron's movie, with the score performed live by a symphony orchestra and chorus and synchronized to the film.

A presentation of the music from the video game series, “Final Fantasy”, featuring a full symphony orchestra, chorus and rock band.

A presentation of the Ridley Scott movie, with Hans Zimmer's score performed live by a symphony orchestra and chorus and synchronized to the film.

A light symphonic performance featuring a CGI version of Barbie, projected on a large video screen; interacting with the conductor and giving the background to the musical pieces and the various instruments in the orchestra. Aimed at giving young girls (and their mothers!) an introduction to classical music in a fun and informative manner.

Lord of the Rings

“For the past 10 years, I have been mixing the touring production of ‘Lord of the Rings - Live to Projection’. Featuring all three films in the LOTR trilogy, the entire musical score is performed live and synchronized to the film. I blend the dialogue and sound effects from the original soundtrack, with the music, which is performed by a full (oversized!) symphony orchestra, a 120-piece adult choir, a 50-piece children’s chorus, 2 vocal soloists and a ‘Hobbit Band’, playing guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, musette, tin whistle, etc

Many unusual instruments are featured, including monochord, rhaita, bass marimba, sarangi, cimbolom, etc.

Working closely with composer, Howard Shore and conductor, Ludwig Wicki, we showcase the music in a much more ‘upfront’ place compared to the film soundtrack. Performances have taken place at the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center, Wolf Trap Performing Arts Center & the International Film Music Festival in Krakow, Poland.”

New York Voices

“I have been Tour Manager & Sound Engineer for 22 years for double GRAMMY-winning jazz vocal group, New York Voices.

Their music is a blend of jazz, Brazilian, standards, pop, etc. They perform with their own trio and are frequent collaborators with other artists, such as the Count Basie Orchestra, Cuban clarinetist, Paquito D’Rivera, and Brazilian singer/songwriter, Ivan Lins.

They were featured on many shows with the Boston Pops and have played Pops shows with other orchestras throughout the world.  During my time with them, as well as performing all over the US, we have done many trips to Japan, played in South Africa, Iceland, Brazil, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and almost every European country.”
